Oriah Freeman: Western Spirits
Within this photography series, I show the aesthetic exploration of the American West drawn from the landscapes and lives that shaped my upbringing in Kansas. My great grandfather’s stories and experiences, rooted in the western aesthetic, have been a central source of inspiration for my work. In this series, I seek to capture the essence of the Western spirit through using both digital and film photography. With the cowboys, cowgirls, and land, I aim to honor this heritage while reflecting on the personal relationship I share with the western aesthetic; one that is both intimate and ever-evolving. This project is a tribute to the cowboy lifestyle, an exploration of identity, and memory. It is a photographic reflection on both the beauty and the ruggedness of the Western landscape, while also showing the enduring spirit of those who call it their own.
